About the MicroPlastics Working Group
Our Mission
We seek to build a coordinated North American community of researchers spanning exposure science, epidemiology, toxicology, law and policy, and public discourse, in collaboration with global efforts and scientific journal editors. Through collective organizing, shared learning, and exchange of ideas, we aim to advance and harmonized research on human exposure to plastics, microplastics, and related contaminants, while fostering a culture of continuous knowledge generation and capacity building. Our goal is to develop a coordinated, systematic, and collaborative approach that accelerates progress, enhances efficiency, and strengthens the impact of our collective efforts. At the core of our mission is a commitment to advancing methodological rigor, promoting data transparency, and scientific accountability, and bridging the gap between science, environmental justice, public discourse, and policy action.
Current Projects
Vision
A future where human exposures to plastics, microplastics, and related contaminants are systemically addressed to ensure health and justice for all, paving the way for sustainable and resilient solutions. Through our collective and organized efforts, we aim to bring about the facilitation of the public good and advance human rights and dignity.
Shared Values
We welcome participation from exposure scientists, epidemiologists, toxicologists, health and environmental economists, policy experts, journal editors, and members of the public, as well as other stakeholders committed to addressing human exposure to microplastic and related contaminants.
We welcome diverse perspectives, experiences, and viewpoints, and participation does not require membership in either ISES or ISEE.
We use our platform to facilitate data transparency and strengthen scientific accountability across research efforts.
We use our platform to promote transparent, accurate, and effective public communication on issues related to plastics and human health.
We use our platform to inform public policy by developing consensus statements, issuing scientific commentaries, engaging with media on emerging research, and serving as a trusted resource and forum for expert consultation by policy actors.
